Grief is the deep pain or sorrow we feel when we lose someone or something of great important to us. It can also be deep pain of what we have envisioned verses what is. Grief presents went we lose a person, a relationship, a sense of identity, or even a life path we once counted on.
Grief is not linear. It can come in waves: one moment you feel okay, the next you can be sobbing, yelling, or numb. It’s normal to feel a wide mix of emotions including but not limited to sadness, anger, guilt, or numbness. It’s also normal to feel nothing at all sometimes. It is important to take care of yourself and give yourself grace and compassion to feel how you feel as you grieve.
If you’re grieving right now:
- You’re not broken: This pain is a natural, human response.
- There’s no timeline: You do not “get over” grief; you grow around it.
- Feel what you feel, even if it doesn’t make sense.
- Ask for support: Talking to a friend, therapist, or a support group.
- Journal: writing out what is in our head can be a release.
Grief is universal, and there are supports out there for you if you are going through loss.
