Is It Time To Try Medication?

June 9, 2025 by Beth Truman

Deciding whether to take mental health medication is deeply personal. It’s not about weakness, it’s about finding the right tools to feel better. Here are some signs it might be time to consider it:

1. Daily Life Feels Unmanageable

If your mental health is making it hard to work, connect with others, or take care of yourself, medication might help stabilize things.

2. Therapy Alone Isn’t Enough

Therapy is powerful, but sometimes it’s not enough on its own. Medication can work alongside therapy to help you make more progress.

3. Symptoms Are Severe

If you’re dealing with intense anxiety, deep depression, suicidal thoughts, or mood swings, medication might be necessary to manage these symptoms safely.

4. There’s a Family History

Mental health conditions often run in families. If that’s true for you and you’re noticing symptoms, early treatment can make a big difference.

5. Your Therapist Recommends It

If your therapist recommends a medication evaluation after working with you, it might be worth listening. Your therapist is an expert in this field and works to understand your individual struggles. If they are suggesting you discuss options for medication, it’s likely because they think it’s a good step for you.

Final Note:
Medication isn’t a magic fix, but for many, it’s a helpful step toward feeling more like themselves. Talk to a trusted provider, ask questions, and remember: healing looks different for everyone.
