Mindful Monday: 3 Simple Ways to Encourage Mindfulness in Your Day

May 20, 2019 by Allison Hock Howell

Last week, Amanda Villaveces and I spoke on our Facebook page about mindfulness within parenting.  One of the key elements that we discussed is how mindfulness is a way of life and can be practiced throughout your day.  While you may think that you need to plan ahead to be mindful or schedule big chunks of time, the beauty of the mind is that it is always with you and it is possible to find small ways to incorporate mindfulness beginning today.

Here are 3 simple ways to be try working mindfulness into your daily routine:

  1. As you walk through a doorway, take a deep breath in and deep breath out.
  2. Find 3-5 minutes to sit in silence without your phone or another person around.  Tune in to what you hear, see and feel around you.  Bring your mind back to what is occurring in this space for these minutes.
  3. As you eat a meal today, work to notice new things about the food that you are eating.  Pay attention to its texture, taste, chew slowly and notice each bite.  Allow yourself to eat without feeling rushed, even if only for a portion of your meal.

These strategies may seem small but taking opportunities to make new connections with yourself and the world around you can have a big impact.  You may find yourself more calm and possibly motivated to find other ways to work mindfulness moments into your daily routine.
