Fostering Emotional Intelligence in Children: Tips and Strategies

February 20, 2023 by Carol Ann Isbell, LMFT, LCSW

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. It is a crucial component of overall well-being and success in life. As parents, it is important to teach our children how to develop their emotional intelligence, and to provide them with the tools and resources they need to navigate their emotions in a healthy way.

Here are a few tips and strategies for fostering emotional intelligence in children:

Model Emotional Intelligence Yourself

As a parent, you are your child’s primary role model. Children learn by example, so it is important to model emotional intelligence yourself. This means being aware of your own emotions, managing them in a healthy way, and expressing them in an appropriate manner.

Encourage Emotion-Talk

It is important to encourage children to talk about their feelings and emotions. This can be done by asking open-ended questions about their day or by providing a safe space for them to talk about their emotions. It is also important to validate their feelings and emotions, and to teach them how to express them in a healthy way.

Teach Emotion-Management Techniques

There are many different techniques that can be used to manage emotions, such as deep breathing, visualization, and mindfulness. Teaching children these techniques can help them to better understand and manage their emotions, and to develop the skills they need to cope with difficult situations.

Encourage Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Teaching children to be empathetic can help them to build better relationships, to be more understanding of others, and to be more compassionate. Encouraging children to see things from other people’s perspectives, to practice active listening, and to volunteer in their community are all ways to foster empathy.

Praise Effort, Not Outcome

When children make an effort to manage their emotions or to understand the emotions of others, it is important to praise them for their efforts. This will encourage them to continue to develop their emotional intelligence, and to take responsibility for their own emotions.

Fostering emotional intelligence in children is essential for their overall well-being and success in life. By prioritizing this part of their development, we can give our children the tools and resources they need to navigate their emotions in a healthy way and thereby increase the likelihood that they will lead fulfilling lives!
