Navigating the Busy Fall Season: Prioritizing Self-Care

September 28, 2023 by Amanda Driggs, LMFT, LCSW

As the leaves change and the days get shorter, the fall season often brings a whirlwind of activities and responsibilities. Fall Festivals, pumpkin patches, hay rides, school activities and sports! While it’s a beautiful time of year, it can also be hectic and overwhelming. Let’s explore some strategies for managing the busy fall season while making sure to prioritize your mental and emotional well-being.

1. Set Clear Priorities: Fall can be a season of multiple commitments, from work to family events and social gatherings. Start by identifying your top priorities for this season. What are the non-negotiables in your life? This could be family time, self-care, or specific work-related goals. Set some time to do this personally and/or within your partnership.

2. Create a Realistic Schedule: Once you’ve identified your priorities, create a fall schedule that realistically accommodates them. Remember that it’s okay to say no to some commitments if they interfere with your well-being or top priorities. Remember, sometimes saying no to things/others, is saying YES to yourself!

3. Practice Mindfulness: As the pace of life quickens in the fall, mindfulness can be your biggest ally. Take a few moments each day to practice mindfulness exercises, such as deep breathing, meditation, or simply being present in the moment. This can help reduce stress and anxiety. Practice this mantra: “Be where your feet are!”

4. Maintain Self-Care Rituals: Don’t abandon your self-care rituals as the seasons change. Continue to prioritize activities that nourish your mind and body. Whether it’s a weekly yoga class, a warm bath, or a good book, these self-care practices can help you stay grounded amidst the chaos of the season.

5. Set Boundaries: Boundaries are crucial, especially during busy times. Let others know what you need and be willing to say no when necessary. Setting boundaries is a sign of self-respect and can help you prevent burnout.

6. Embrace the Season: While managing the busyness, don’t forget to enjoy the beauty of fall. Take walks in nature, savor seasonal foods, and find joy in the small moments. Seek connection within friends and family and pursue support where needed. Embracing the season can enhance your overall well-being!

The fall season can be both hectic and enchanting. By setting clear priorities, creating a balanced schedule, and maintaining self-care practices, you can navigate the busyness while still prioritizing your mental and emotional wellbeing. Remember that seeking support and being mindful of your boundaries are signs of strength, not weakness. This fall, make self-wellness a priority, and you’ll find yourself better equipped to enjoy the season to the fullest!
